Joining in with Amy and Five on Friday
One*****Jersey Beans
The first of my five is a recipe...just right for colder days and very easy to make in a slow cooker or oven. This was a traditional Jersey dish in the past and often families would take their crock ( stone casserole) down to the cooling parish bread oven on Saturday evening and leave to cook all night.
Jersey Bean crock.
Ingredients:
500g of mixed beans ( kidney,haricot etc)
400g belly pork cut into small chunks
1 carrot chopped
1 onion chopped
Small tin baked beans
2 beef or veg stock cubes crumbled
1 tablespoon tomato purée
Method:
Start by soaking beans overnight in plenty of water. First thing in the morning add all the ingredients except the beans into the slow cooker. Drain the beans and put them in a pan. Add boiling water and bring to the boil. Once boiling allow to bubble for 10 minutes. This helps to tenderise the beans and gets rid of any toxins. Drain beans and add to slow cooker. Give everything a good stir and top up with boiling water to almost the top of cooker. Put on lid and set to high. Leave to cook all day. You will have a fabulous smell all day and instant dinner by the evening. Serve in bowls with lots of crusty bread. It is also lovely served with freshly cooked spinach or Savoy cabbage .
Two*******Walking
Two*******Walking
Lots of great walks this week. Still enjoying some autumn colour and scrunching leaves underfoot, my youngest couldn't help having a leaf moment on Sunday...he's only 23!.
Came across swans crossing the road. They always look so serene on water but this was the funniest sight. Obviously they felt the ponds were better on the other side of the road. I am never sure how near to get to swans, something tells me they could bite!
Skies were very leaden but still mild.
Excitement levels are high at the moment. Very shortly we will be heading to Copenhagen for a few days. Looking forward to real wintry weather and lots of atmosphere to soak up. If anyone has any ideas of places to see or must do's please add a comment.
Four*********Orchids
Loving the orchids in my conservatory. These haven't just been bought but flowered again after several years. They are amazing considering they get very little attention other than the odd squirt of water.
Five********Blogging
I have been mulling over my blogging adventure so far....main observation is that it is totally addictive. I have followed blogs for some years and loved the feeling of community that they give. Now being part of it is very special. I treasure any comments that are made and need to say a particular thank you to Sarah at 'Down by the sea' who regularly visits and adds encouraging comments.
Have a good weekend and happy blogging!

Looks like a great recipe, perfect for this time of year. My daughter is going to Copenhagen next month and is looking forward to the Christmas market and the Zoo which is also decked out for the season. Hope you have a great time.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting! Yes I'm looking forward to the Christmas markets...hopefully I will be able to do some Christmas shopping. The zoo sounds good. Barbara
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your five very much especially your walk. I found the swans and geese near me were preferring to sit on the grass, maybe the water's a bit chilly! :-)
ReplyDeleteIt it definitely is today! Thank you for visiting and have a lovely weekend. Barbara
ReplyDeleteYour beans sound very delicious indeed and just the right sort of thing for this time of year. I hope that you have a wonderful time in Copenhagen, it sounds like an amazing city. ReplyDeleteThat picture of your son made me smile - my 19 year-old daughter does exactly the same thing! How lovely that they are still willing to give way to their inner children. x
ReplyDeleteI think that's the secret to a happy life...being able to keep the child in you alive! Thanks for visiting, hope you have a good weekend. B
ReplyDeleteLovely photos - you're never too old to scrunch in autumn leaves! Copenhagen sounds very exciting, especially at this time of year, and your orchids look gorgeous. The flowers last for ages, don't they?
ReplyDeleteCathy x
Thanks for visiting! Yes the orchid flowers last for two or three months...they are definitely worth buying as long as you keep them in bright light and fairly warm. Have a good weekend. Barbara
ReplyDeleteThat looks a lovely walk, I don't blame you for not getting too close to those swans, they're very big birds aren't they! Have a super time in Copenhagen, I bet the Christmas markets will be good. It's nice to read that you're enjoying blogging! xx
ReplyDeleteThank you for dropping by. Yes I think the markets will be good. Also looking forward to visiting the Viking ship museum which is near by. Have a great weekend. Barbara
ReplyDeleteOoo! Copenhagen, how lovely. It's on my wish list of places to visit. Our younger daughter went in December a year ago and loved it.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed it will live up to expectations. Thanks for dropping by. Barbara
DeleteWonderful photos! Loved seeing each and every one! And five-bean soup! Ooh, haven't made that in quite a while...a must-do! Love that you are headed to Copenhagen! What an awesome trip that is going to be!
ReplyDeleteHow interesting that you call it 5 bean soup...I guess it has lots of different names depending where you live. B
DeleteSuch a fun post Barbara!! I love the recipe. ;) And the photos from your walk are just beautiful. There's such a charm to the countryside there that feels much different than a walk around my neighborhood here in the States. Lol
ReplyDeleteThat photo of your son playing around is so cute too! I love the community sense from blogging too - and so happy to have found another friend.
Blessings to you! xoxo
Thank you for visiting. I think you are my first American visitor to leave a comment 😀😀😀😀
DeleteMy sons - although younger at 17 and 15 do the same, where it gets 'more fun' is when my husband joins in too! I don't think they'll ever grow out of it - which makes autumn all the more special :)
ReplyDeleteI agree...thank you for dropping by. Barbara
ReplyDeleteWalking at this time of year is wonderful isn't it, your photos are lovely. And well done on the orchid, they are tricky to get to flower again. I hope you have a wonderful time in Copenhagen. CJ xx
